FIFA to step up anti-racism efforts for World Cup
AP 3:52 p.m. EST December 2, 2014
ZURICH (AP) — FIFA has committed to tackle racism incidents harder at World Cup matches after criticism of its lackluster efforts in Brazil.
Taking advice from its anti-racism task force, FIFA has pledged to help train and appoint anti-discrimination officers to work at qualifying matches for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
The task force met Tuesday, chaired by FIFA vice president Jeffrey Webb, who spoke out in Brazil against failures to gather evidence and prosecute disciplinary cases.
FIFA will also guide its 209 member federations toward "best practice on policy, education, sanctions and cooperation with civil society partners."
"Both measures send out a concrete message," Webb said in a statement published by FIFA. "Now we need the full support from clubs, member associations, NGOs and campaign groups."
The full support of FIFA appeared to be lacking in June when it did not sanction reported incidents of discriminatory chants and banners, and fans wearing black-face makeup.
Webb, who is black, also pointed then to challenges in tackling longstanding racism problems in Russian football.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter said, after watching the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro with Russia's President Vladimir Putin, that they would make the issue a priority.
FIFA's statement Tuesday acknowledged the importance of using the next World Cup to "showcase FIFA's zero-tolerance policy against any form of discrimination."

Sony does not plan to renew FIFA sponsorship contract – sources
TOKYO (Reuters) – Sony Corp does not plan to renew its sponsorship contract with FIFA, the governing body for world soccer, as the Japanese electronics maker needs to prioritise its restructuring efforts, people familiar with the matter told Reuters.
Such a move would follow Emirates Airline’s [EMIRA.UL] announcement this month that it was ending its sponsorship of FIFA, a blow to the governing body as it investigates whether there was corruption in the bidding process for the next two World Cup competitions.
Sony has been a FIFA sponsor for the eight years to 2014 in a contract worth 33 billion yen ($280 million).
Sony on Tuesday said it was aiming to restructure its television and mobile divisions further, while targeting robust growth for its electronics devices division, which houses its growing image sensors business.
An official for the electronics conglomerate said he could not comment on future contracts.
The people familiar with the matter declined to be identified as they were not authorised to speak to the media.
A FIFA spokesman said: “The existing contract with Sony runs until 31 December 2014 and we are currently in discussions with the brand.”
Sponsors have put pressure on FIFA to respond robustly to allegations of bribery to secure the 2018 World Cup for Russia and the 2022 tournament to Qatar.
Earlier this month, FIFA’s ethics judge Hans-Joachim Eckert said in a statement there were no grounds to reopen the controversial bidding process, clearing Qatar and Russia of wrongdoing.
But that announcement was immediately undermined when Michael Garcia, the former U.S. prosecutor that led FIFA’s own investigation, said that he disputed its summary of his findings.
A number of European officials have called on FIFA to publish Garcia’s full report but the governing body said it could not release it to the public for legal reasons.
Garcia and Eckert met face to face and decided that Garcia’s report would be sent to the chairman of FIFA’s audit and compliance committee, Domenico Scala, who would in turn decide how much of the report should be sent to the FIFA executive committee.
They also confirmed that the ethics committee had opened a number of formal cases against unidentified individuals and FIFA confirmed it had lodged a criminal complaint in Switzerland, but stood by its conclusion that any wrongdoing was not enough to jeopardise the winning bids.

Germany receive FIFA World Cup Badge at Die Mannschaft film premiere
(FIFA.com) Monday 10 November 2014
Prior to today’s world premiere of the film Die Mannschaft (The Team) - a documentary charting Germany’s triumphant 2014 FIFA World Cup™ campaign - FIFA President Blatter awarded the German national team and its coaching staff the FIFA World Champions Badge in Berlin. On the stage at the cinema in Potsdamer Platz, Germany’s entire FIFA World Cup winning side, German FA [DFB] president Wolfgang Niersbach and the FIFA President looked back on the unforgettable emotions the tournament in Brazil stirred up.
“Winning the World Cup in Brazil crowned the development that started with the summer fairytale of hosting the finals in 2006,” said FIFA President Blatter, who also praised the exemplary ambassadorial role the 23 members of the squad played at the tournament: “The team’s attractive and attacking playing style is symbolic of a cosmopolitan and engaging Germany that people everywhere recognise, respect and appreciate.”
FIFA first awarded the coveted World Champions Badge to Italy in 2006. In recognition of Germany’s success at Brazil 2014, and as a permanent reminder of their triumph, the team may now wear the Badge on their shirts until the Final of the Russia 2018 World Cup.
DFB president Niersbach was delighted to receive the accolade, saying: “It’s a huge honour for our national team to be able to wear the World Champions Badge on their shirt and it is visible proof that they achieved great things in Brazil. The entire footballing community in Germany is proud of this golden emblem.”
Coach Joachim Low and World Cup-winning captain Philipp Lahm likewise expressed their pride at the award, as well as having lifted the country’s fourth title following the achievements in 1954, 1974 and 1990. “The Badge is a wonderful honour but at the same time I view it as an incentive and an obligation not to ease off,” said Low.

FIFA Official Doubts the 2022 World Cup Will be Held in Qatar
By: NICK SCHWARTZ | usatoday.com
FIFA’s decision to award the 2022 World Cup to Qatar has been heavily criticized since the final vote in 2010, with allegations of corruption within FIFA and Qatar’s record of human rights violations leading many to call for the decision to be reversed. The challenges of holding the world’s biggest tournament in western Asia during the summer months — when temperatures in Doha reach an average high of 106 degrees — seem unsolvable. Qatari officials have promised to spend $4 billion on air conditioned stadiums to protect players and fans, but not everyone is convinced.
FIFA Executive Committee member Theo Zwanziger told German newspaper Bild that he does not think the tournament will take place in Qatar.
Via Reuters:“I personally think that in the end the 2022 World Cup will not take place in Qatar. Medics say that they cannot accept responsibility with a World Cup taking place under these conditions…. Fans from around the world will be coming and traveling in this heat and the first life-threatening case will trigger an investigation by a state prosecutor.”
FIFA president Sepp Blatter admitted in May that awarding Qatar the World Cup was “a mistake,” and has also said that it is not “rational and reasonable” to play the 2022 World Cup in the summer. Moving the tournament to the winter would wreak havoc on club football league schedules across the world.
If Qatar is stripped of the World Cup, it could potentially be hosted in the United States. The U.S. finished second in the voting process in 2010, ahead of South Korea, Japan and Australia.

Argentina's Sweet Revenge on Germany
Source: Reuters |
Argentina spoiled the party for world cup champions Germany by crushing the hosts 4-2 in an international friendly game in Duesseldorf on Wednesday .
A brilliant performance from Angel Di Maria spurred Argentina to a crushing 4-2 friendly win over world champions Germany on Wednesday in an entertaining rematch of July's World Cup final.
Despite the absence of injured captain Lionel Messi, Argentina ran circles around the World Cup winners on their home turf in the first match for both teams since Germany's 1-0 extra-time victory in the final in Brazil.
So impressive was the performance of the Argentine winger, who had missed the final through injury, in the Duesseldorf arena that even many of the German fans applauded his performance when he was replaced late in the match.
Germany coach Joachim Loew put only four of the starting 11 that won Germany's fourth World Cup on the pitch in the warm-up match for their Euro 2016 campaign that starts on Sunday against Scotland.
Captain Philipp Lahm, striker Miroslav Klose and defender Per Mertesacker, who all retired following the World Cup triumph, were hailed by the sell-out crowd of 51,132 while several other key players were missing through injury.
The inexperienced Germany defence could not contain new Manchester United signing Di Maria in the first half but also left lots of open space for lightening counter-attacks by moving deep into Argentina's territory.

On Sunday, Joachim Low's side host Scotland in Dortmund in their first qualifier for UEFA EURO 2016. For a German team still taking in the World Cup triumph, the two games have come around quickly.
"I think it's not easy for us - that's clear," Bayern Munich goalkeeper Manuel Neuer said on Monday. "For Scotland it's the game of the year to start against us. We have to play well against Argentina with regard to the weekend and to be fully prepared for it."

France Beats Ticas
France have reaffirmed their title credentials at the FIFA U-20 Women's World Cup Canada 2014 with a dominant 5-1 victory over Costa Rica at Montreal's Olympic Stadium. Gilles Eyquem's side were in rampant form against a Ticas side that simply could not cope with their opponents' evident technical and physical superiority.
As U-17 world champions in 2012 and European U-19 queens last year, the French are considered among the favourites for the trophy and, from the offset, they set about proving why. It took just seven minutes for them to take the lead, with Faustine Robert earning a penalty after she was taken out by keeper Noelia Bermudez in the act of hitting a post with a lob from the corner of the area. Claire Lavogez took full and emphatic advantage of the opportunity with a textbook penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way with a rocket-like shot into the roof of the net.

FIFA Bans Nigeria Due to Government Interference
FIFA has suspended Nigeria from any international competition after allegations of government interference in its football federation. Nigerian teams and officials, including club sides, are now barred from international matches and meetings.
The decision was made after a court order made the Nigerian Minister of Sports to appoint a senior member of the civil service to take over the running of the Nigeria FA.
"The suspension will be lifted once the court actions have been withdrawn and the properly elected NFF Executive Committee, the NFF general assembly and the NFF administration are able to work without any interference in their affairs,"

FECAFOOT To Investigate Match-Fixing Allegations
Cameroon’s football federation(FECAFOOT) said it will investigate allegations of match-fixing by its own team at the FIFA World Cup in Brasil and the possible existence of “seven bad apples” in the squad.
The football federation said in a statement late Monday it had instructed its own ethics committee to open an investigation that will probe allegations of fraud in Cameroon’s three Group A matches (losing all three of its group-stage matches at the World Cup: 1-0 to Mexico, 4-0 to Croatia and 4-1 to host Brazil.)
“Recent allegations of fraud around Cameroon’s three 2014 FIFA World Cup preliminary games, especially Cameroon vs. Croatia, as well as the `existence of seven bad apples (in our national team)’ do not reflect the values and principles promotes by our administration in line with the FIFA Code of Conduct and the ethics of our nation,” Fecafoot said in the statement.
“We wish to inform the general public that, though not contacted by FIFA in regards to this affair, our administration has already instructed its ethics committee to further investigate these accusations.”
It was a bad nightmare for Cameroon after conceding nine goals and scoring just one in its three games.

2014 World Cup Round of 16 Format Explained
The stage is set for the 2014 World Cup Round of 16.
Here's the format on how the stage will take place.
There are eight groups of four teams each in the group stage. Each team gets three points for a win or one point for a draw. Whichever team teams end up in the top two slots of the group based on points advances to the Round of 16.
The winner of each group plays the runner-up of another group. For instance, Brazil, the winner of Group A, will face Chile, the runner-up in Group B, in the Round of 16.
The games are staggered so they’re not all on the same day. The Round of 16 opens on June 28. There will be two games each day through July 1.
After the Round of 16, there will be eight teams left in what will then be the quarterfinals. The winners of those games advance to the semifinals, and those winners advance to the final. There will also be a game between the two losing semifinal teams to see who gets in third place.
The rules for the Round of 16 and the rest of the knockout stage are not so different from the group stage, except that there is not a possibility for a draw.
Instead, if the match is even at the end of 90 minutes, then extra time of two periods of 15 minutes each will be played.
If the score is still even at that point, the match will proceed to a penalty shootout. This same method will be used to determine winners throughout the knockout stage.
In the penalty kick phase, a coin toss is held to determine which team kicks first. The referee chooses the goal at which the kicks are taken. All kicks are taken at one goal. All players other than the kicker and goalkeeper must remain in the pitch’s center circle.
Every penalty kick is taken from the penalty mark, which is 12 yards out from the goalmouth. The goalkeeper must remain between the goal-posts on the goal-line until the ball is kicked. If the goalkeeper blocks the ball then the kicker does not get an opportunity to score on a rebound.
The teams alternate kicks until five have been taken by each team. Whichever team has scored more goals wins. If it comes to a point where one team is up so much that it would be impossible for the other team to match the goals, then the shout out ends.
If the five kicks each still yields a draw, then the shoot-out proceeds to sudden death rounds of one kick each until one side scores and the other does not. - theepochtimes.com

USA Advances to Knockout Round Despite 1-0 Loss to Germany
The United States suffered a 1-0 loss to Germany in a hard-fought final group stage game, but thanks Portugal’s 2-1 win over Ghana, the US team will advance to the knockout round.
The Germans, three-time World Cup champions, finished with seven points, while the U.S. had four after allowing a 95th-minute goal against Portugal on Sunday in a 2-2 draw. Portugal also had four, but the Americans advanced from the so-called “Group of Death” because their goal difference was even and the Portuguese were minus three.

FIFA World Cup 101 : A Guide for Football Newbies
The qualification stage:
The host country gets qualified, just because they are the hosts. Apart from them though, the remaining teams have to earn their place in the World Cup. They ought fight for their spot against the teams that part of their region and that stage begins three years before the World Cup takes place. For example: The qualification round for the ongoing FIFA World Cup in Brazil commenced in 2011.
The qualifying teams come from the regions of Europe, Africa, Central America and the Caribbean, Asia, North America, the South Pacific and South America. Football’s apex body, FIFA has determined the different qualifying regions which are known as confederations.
There is no clear-cut rule about how many teams from each region would qualify for the World Cup. The size and quality of the region are the crucial factor before deciding how many teams from each region would make it to the World Cup.
How teams are divided into groups:
The round of 16 begins following the group stage comes to an end. There are 8 groups in which 32 teams are placed with every group having 4 teams each. For the ongoing World Cup, the groups are recognised by the alphabets A to H.
The teams are divided into groups by using a semi-random method where in not all the European or Asian or teams from the same continent end up in the same group.
From every group, top teams head to the next stage.
Scoring systems
The winning team Is awarded with three points, while a loss does not give any point to the team that ends on a losing side. A draw means, each team who is involved in the match gets a point each.
As the group stage is over, in case of tie, the winner is determined via penalty shootout.
Round of 16 and knock-out stages
The teams that finishes at the top in Group A faces the second-placed team in Group B, and vice versa. And so on, in the remaining 6 groups.
Following round of 16, there are only 8 teams that are left with a chance to enter the semi-finals. With 4 places to vie for, 8 teams contest for the place in the semi-final.
The winners of semi-finals come up against each other in the final and the winner gets to lift the prestigious World Cup trophy.

Mexico Coach Miguel Herrera Defends Gay Slur Chant by Fans
Mexico coach defends gay slur chant by crowd
CARLOS RODRIGUEZ - AP Sports Writer (AP)
SANTOS, Brazil (AP) — Mexico coach Miguel Herrera has defended World Cup fans chanting a gay slur which is under investigation by the sport's international governing body.
Herrera says Mexico fans shouting the slur as the rival team's goalkeeper takes a goal kick is "not that bad."
He says "We're with our fans. It's something they do to pressure the opposing goalkeeper."
Fare, the European fan-monitoring group, reported the chants at Mexico's 1-0 win over Cameroon in Natal. FIFA subsequently opened a disciplinary case against the Mexico federation, which is responsible for fan behavior inside stadiums.
FIFA President Sepp Blatter and Brazil President Dilma Rousseff have pledged to use the World Cup as a platform to fight racism and discrimination.
The chant became popular during a Mexico-United States qualifying match for the 2004 Olympics.
